Future at FC Bayern uncertain: Konrad Laimer

As of: May 4, 2026 • 1:28 p.m

Konrad Laimer’s contract with FC Bayern expires next summer. He would like to extend his contract, but only at increased salary. The club wants to stay tough this time after the costly extensions of Davies, Upamecano and Musiala.

Konrad Laimer was actually considered one of the winners of FC Bayern’s successful season so far. Nobody embodies the desire to hunt for the ball demanded by coach Vincent Kompany like the Austrian. But now his future on Säbener Strasse seems more uncertain than ever. Laimer’s contract only runs until the summer of 2027. Talks about an extension have not yet led to an agreement.

Eberl confirms standstill in Laimer poker

Sports director Max Eberl commented after the 3:3 draw against Heidenheim for the first time about Laimer’s personnel: “These are simply conversations, these are ideas. There’s no way we’re getting on top of each other at the moment!” At the same time, Eberl emphasized that there was “no bad blood, no discord.” “There are two points of view and you have to see whether you can somehow find the bridge at some point.” The main point of contention should be the player’s salary expectations.

According to media reports, Laimer is envisioning a salary of 15 million euros, which the Munich team rejects. The Austrian international is currently earning around eight million euros for the record champions. His desired salary means almost doubling.

Laimer’s development: From Rotation player to regular strength

However, Laimer’s role has changed significantly since he took up his post almost three years ago. In his debut season under coach Thomas Tuchel, the right-footed player was a rotation player and also alternated between the right-back position and the defensive midfield position. The operating times initially changed little under coach Kompany. Laimer often started on the bench, but the Belgian’s plan to move Joshua Kimmich from the right defensive side to the six opened up the right-back spot for Laimer. In the season finale, the 28-year-old played firmly on his side.

Laimer will also be placed under Kompany in the new season. The Belgian appreciates his versatility. Laimer can defend on the right or left wing and can also help out in defensive midfield when needed. He is also perfect for Kompany’s pressing into the opponent’s box.

Zickler about Laimer: “Maybe he lacks appreciation”

“He sprints, he runs high, he goes into duels. You don’t always just need to play well, but also to work on the field,” his former coach Alexander Zickler praises him in “Blickpunkt Sport”. The former FC Bayern professional has known Laimer since the U15 in Salzburg. Zickler was an assistant coach under Marco Rose and also worked with Laimer in Leipzig.

“I wouldn’t have quite predicted the development he has now taken, but what he has achieved is all the better,” says Zickler, happy for his former protégé. The 52-year-old doesn’t want to get involved in the contract poker, but suspects: “Perhaps he lacks the appreciation that he deserves. He may not be the top player, but he is a fighter. He has an incredible mentality and I believe that you need players like that in a team that is outstanding in terms of football.”

FC Bayern wants to stay tough with Laimer

At FC Bayern, too, they have no doubts about Laimer’s qualities, but they would like to not reward them quite as handsomely as the Austrian imagines. He, in turn, would like to catch up financially with teammates like Alphonso Davies, who is now expected to earn around 15 million euros from the contract he signed a year ago. Eberl originally took over with the clear mandate to adjust the salary structures downwards again. That didn’t really work in the negotiations between Jamal Musiala, Dayot Upamecano and Davies. All extended to increased salaries.

The club now wants to stay tough with Laimer. Also because Laimer moved from Leipzig to Munich without a transfer fee: “He came for a free transfer, so we wouldn’t lose much,” Eberl answered when asked what would happen if both parties did not come to an agreement.

There are enough people interested in Laimer. FC Barcelona, among others, is said to be interested in the Austrian.
