The boy band era is revived at the Bankzitters in the Ziggo Dome. This weekend the group will give three sold-out concerts in the hall in Amsterdam (capacity 17,000). Two shows are for all ages, the first, on Friday evening, was for the over 16s – but the audience wasn’t much older than that.
For two hours, fans went wild on hits such as ‘Je look towards me’, which scored more than 1.5 million streams on Spotify within a week, and ‘House party’, which reached number 2 in the Top 40.
The Bankzitters have now grown into a company with 18 employees in an office in Utrecht, which the five gentlemen run themselves. In that respect they are quite unique as a ‘self-made’ boy band.
Milo, Rob, Raoul, Matthyas and Koen celebrate the tenth anniversary of their YouTube channel, which now has 1.1 million subscribers, in the Ziggo Dome. In their videos they mainly do things a lot and/or for a long time: ordering everything from the fish stall or McDonald’s, staying awake for 24 hours or sitting in a jacuzzi. The Bankzitters will simply carry out the challenges that you fantasize about as a teenager during the school break. They joke a lot, especially about each other and themselves, and are not afraid to be a little embarrassed.
Stunt cyclist
Their musical excursion also started as such a challenge, but this concert in the Ziggo Dome was no joke. A real boy band show full of spectacle, with dancers, fireworks, acrobats and a stunt cyclist on a BMX.
During the opening number, the gentlemen flew from the audience to the stage in five lift boxes. Halfway through the show they drove through the audience in a white convertible, causing the sea of fans to willingly split in two.
And yes, as is often the case with boy bands, it was not a vocal tour de force: the timing of the raps was not always spot on, and the pitch of the singing certainly not. But a good sound mix makes a big difference, especially in combination with autotune and the accompaniment of a professional live band.

The gentlemen themselves often admit that they cannot sing very well, but that does not mean that they do not try their best, or that their music is a cynical attempt to rake in even more money. The songs are catchy and the show, with guest appearances by Roxy Dekker and Suzan & Freek, is well put together: dynamic, with energy peaks and moments of rest in the right places, lots of humor and, above all, a lot of genuine fun.
Boy bands are all about charm and entertainment, and De Bankzitters certainly delivered that on Friday evening.
