Borussia Dortmund is looking for a successor to Nuri Şahin. Now the bosses have apparently met with a hot candidate.

According to a report by “Ruhr Nachrichten”, those responsible at Borussia Dortmund are to negotiate personally with Niko Kovač. Managing director Lars Ricken and sports director Sebastian Kehl traveled to Salzburg to convince the former Bayern coach to join BVB. Kovač is set to succeed Nuri Şahin, who was released last week after a run of four defeats since the start of the year.

The club already contacted the Berlin native last week. However, Kovač refused to only act as a temporary solution until the summer. A contract until the end of the season is now being discussed, which could be automatically extended if there is sporting success.

In the Champions League duel against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday evening (9 p.m./DAZN), Mike Tullberg will once again be on the bench as interim coach. The Dane had already looked after the team in the 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen last weekend.

Kovač most recently coached VfL Wolfsburg. He was released from Lower Saxony in March 2024. The Croatian has previously also been on the sidelines as national coach of his home country in Frankfurt, Munich and Monaco. He won the DFB Cup with Eintracht in 2018, as well as a year later with FC Bayern, which he also led to the championship at the same time.
