Preparations for the World Rowing Championships in 2026 are therefore already in full swing. Quays, jetties, bridges and the historic boathouse are being tackled and renovated. An important part of the work is dredging the Bosbaan. Councilor Sofyan Mbarki explains: “The Bosbaan will have a depth of 2.20 meters instead of the original 2 meters. This is necessary to make the sport a bit fairer.”
Dredging
During dredging, as much as a thousand trucks’ worth of mud is removed from the track. This material is reused in various places in the Netherlands. One of the locations is a meadow in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, where the mud is used to raise the soil there.
The Botenhuis, a national monument, is also being renovated. “The monument is being restored to its former glory on the outside, it was outdated in recent years and was not in good condition. Inside it is being renovated and made contemporary,” says Mbarki. He hopes that the complex will last another hundred years.
