Borussia Mönnchengladbach: Virkus is planning the 2023/24 season with Farke

Reference to time at Norwich

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s sporting director Roland Virkus has backed head coach Daniel Farke despite a mediocre interim record. “Daniel has shown that he can master it and that he deserves this chance,” said Virkus on Thursday and confirmed that he was also planning the next season with Farke. After 30 match days, Borussia is ranked tenth in the European Cup and below their own sporting expectations.

“Of course we are not satisfied with this season,” said the manager. Virkus is counting on Farke to develop successfully, just like at his former station Norwich City in England: “In Norwich, a team was being rebuilt. The situation is similar and comparable.” Farke once led second division club Norwich to the Premier League and signed a contract with Borussia until the start of the current season until 2025. He was the successor to Adi Hütter, from whom the club had parted ways by mutual agreement after just one year after tenth place at the end of the previous season.

The “foals” can also currently be found at the same rank. With the difference: Hütter’s point average was 1.38, while Farke currently only has 1.22. The Austrian, who was committed to an exit clause for 7.5 million euros, justified his departure in 2022 by saying that sportingly they had not achieved “what we all imagined”. A total of 45 points were scored in the 2021/22 season, and nine points are currently missing from this result.

Virkus does not want to let the current season run out. “Now it’s about approaching the last few games with a high level of focus and making them as positive as possible in order to leave the season with a better feeling and then initiate the conversion in the summer,” emphasized the sporting director before the home game against VfL Bochum on Saturday (15 June). :30 p.m.). Coach Farke said: “I want to fulfill the wishes and expectations of the fans and get the best out of the current team. Of course, it’s also important to me to position the club well for the future and bring new energy into it.” It is important for him to finish the season well.

Gladbach fan “Elwood” commented in the TM forum: “For me, a relatively normal and typical Farke PK. At least you could hear that no matter how the season ends, Virkus will continue to plan with Farke. One would have looked closely at Norwich, and Farke had a difficult first year there too. Farke was only able to shine after the squad change was completed. The same is expected here. The only thing that really surprises me then: why did Virkus completely skip the last transfer window? He should have signed or at least borrowed at least one alternative up front.”
