Borussia Mönchengladbach: Roland Virkus becomes Eberl’s successor

Borussia Mönchengladbach have found a successor for Max Eberl and decided on a man from their own ranks. Roland Virkus will take on the difficult inheritance.

This is a surprise: Borussia Mönchengladbach has found a successor for the former sports director Max Eberl. Contrary to what was announced when Eberl left, he comes from within his own ranks and is called Roland Virkus.

The 55-year-old has been promoted from “director of the youth academy” to sports director of the professional team. “I am very happy about the confidence of the club management,” said Virkus, “for me this new task is a great challenge, which I approach with humility and respect, but also with great joy and full of energy.”

Bonhof: “Right man for this job”

Virkus has been with Borussia since 1990, including as a youth coach for the U15 to U19 juniors and head of the youth boarding school. He will act alone as sports director, there will be no dual leadership, as has been publicly discussed. However, he is supported by scouting boss and squad planner Steffen Korell. However, he would like to continue to work mainly in the second row.

Vice-President Rainer Bonhof explained that the new sporting director has everything “that you need for the position of sports director. He has experience in running a professional football operation, experience in squad planning, experience in dealing with coaches and players, experience in dealing with Player advisors and a large network. He’s the right man for the job,” said the 1974 world champion.
