FIFA has decided that players must fundamentally acquire a “football nationality”, which is/can be based primarily on ancestry, length of residence, etc. The aim is to prevent players from changing nationalities like shirts – see Handball/Qatar. Something like “Mehmet Aurelio” and “Mert Nobre” are no longer so easy at the moment. FYI: Brazilian footballers without national team appearances who received a Turkish passport and were eligible to play “immediately”.
This choice of nationality has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with senior national team selection for players with multiple nationalities. I just don’t understand why people don’t get it. Until the third game of any international match for a nation, a player under the age of 21 (I don’t mean any youth national teams) can choose FREELY whether he wants to play for the country of his father, his mother, his grandparents, etc.
If Can A. Güner were only Argentinian or only German or only Turkish, he couldn’t just become a Turkish senior national player. But he isn’t, so the whole discussion is unnecessary. He apparently has a German and an Argentine passport – he would now need a Turkish passport, which he can get without any problems due to his ancestry and can therefore play for the Turkish national team and therefore also be listed as a Turkish player.
However, any reports about passport applications in the Turkish media should be viewed with caution.
Back topic: Apparently, according to bild.de, the player reported sick to Gladbach and Gala hasn’t reported to the club yet… of course that’s not the fine Turkish way, if that’s true.
