Bornemann: St. Pauli’s successful series thanks to Hürzeler’s “great security”

Flawless record of the new coach

According to sporting director Andreas Bornemann, FC St. Pauli’s current series of successes is also linked to the new coach Fabian Hürzeler’s attention to detail. “He attaches great importance to the little things, has a clear structure and pays great attention to details. Fabian is willing to invest a lot of energy and time in this project,” Bornemann told dpa about the youngest head coach in German professional football with a flawless record so far.

At the end of the first half of the season and before the change of coach from Timo Schultz to Hürzeler, the Hamburg second division team was in danger of relegation. The club has won all of the first eight games under the 30-year-old Hürzeler since the change in December and has worked its way up into a circle of extended promotion aspirants. The winning streak set a new club record, and the league record of the single-pronged 2nd Bundesliga, set by Karlsruher SC in 1986 with ten wins in a row, is now within reach.

Bornemann praised the US-born Hürzeler’s self-confidence: “He is very careful about what he does. He has a high level of inner conviction and clarity about how he wants to play football, how he thinks about the sport and how he wants to convey it. That gives him great security.” The fifth-placed player from Hamburg is eight points away from city rivals HSV in terms of promotion and relegation. In front of HSV are leaders Darmstadt 98 and 1. FC Heidenheim. There are still nine game days to go. FC St. Pauli will meet the top three 1. FC Heidenheim (April 8), HSV (April 21) and Darmstadt 98 (May 6) away from home.
