The municipality of Breda creates an ecological passage on a viaduct over the A58 for Boomkikkers. Through the green strip, tree frog populations in different nature reserves can reach each other more easily and reinforce the kind of genetically. The municipality estimates that the project will cost nearly 280,000 euros. The province contributes around 125,000 euros.
Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians can continue to use the road later. At the moment there are already tree frogs on both sides of the road over the A58 near Bavel. According to the municipality of Breda, building a larger ecoduct was not an option, because it would cost at least 12 million euros and such a connection usually connects large nature reserves.
“This is not really the case at the location in question,” says the municipality. “The viaduct connects small nature reserves with a somewhat larger nature reserve.” A long tunnel was also not possible, because tree frogs do not go through it.
The tree frog used to be in full sandy soils, especially sandy soils. At the end of the last century, 80 percent of the tree frogs had disappeared and the animal was one of the strongest endangered amphibians in the Netherlands. Due to targeted measures and other nature management, things are going a lot better with the species.
