Bonnie Tyler remains “seriously ill but stable” after emergency intestinal surgery last week in a hospital in Faro, Portugal.

Tyler’s management posted an update on the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer’s website on Tuesday, May 12. It said that despite the seriousness of the situation, Tyler’s doctors “remain confident that she will make a full recovery.”

The statement also addressed the family’s disappointment with “the numerous sensational and untrue rumors currently circulating in the media.” Specifically, they targeted a man named Liberto Mealha, who had presented himself in media interviews as a close friend. The family “would like to make it clear that Liberto Mealha does not represent them in any way and has no contact with them regarding Bonnie,” the statement said.

Family requests privacy

“As soon as there is further news about Bonnie’s condition, we will issue a further statement. However, we ask the media to refrain from speculation and spreading baseless rumors that serve only to incriminate her family, friends and many fans. We once again appeal for privacy and decency during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.

Tyler’s team announced her hospitalization and emergency procedure last Wednesday, May 6th. At the time, it was said that the operation “went well” and that the singer was “recovering.” However, two days later, another update followed that Tyler had been “placed in an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery.” (The current statement left it unclear whether Tyler is still in this condition.)

Tyler has a European tour planned for later this month that will celebrate the 50th anniversary of her recording career. (Their debut single “My! My! Honeycomb” was released in 1976.) A planned May 22 appearance at a festival in Malta has already been canceled, with the remaining tour dates still on the calendar. The tour is scheduled to start on May 30th in Wiesmoor.
