For the second consecutive year the Italian couple fails to meet their history in Melbourne: the number 6 seeded couple wins with the result of 6-7 7-6 6-3
Nothing to do. Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori return home from Melbourne without the doubles title that eluded them last year too. Celebrating is the pair formed by the Finnish Heliovaara and the British Patten, very insidious due to the left-handed-right-handed mix. The fight was all in the first set with an 87 minute tie break won by the Azzurri who at that point seemed to be on the right track. And instead the rivals managed to win the second, again at the tie break, starting off like a rocket with the break at the beginning of the third which shattered our dreams. At the end our team came close to recovering, but it wasn’t meant to be. It ends 6-7 (16) 7-6 (5) 6-3.
THE MATCH
—
And to say that the premises announced a rapid closure of the first partial. The Azzurri immediately took the lead by a break but had to defend themselves more than once from the assault of Heliovaara Patten, who in turn did well to avoid the 4-1 collapse. In the eighth game of the first set Vavassori again has to save the situation by canceling a break point but in the 10th game, after a discussion between Vavassori and the chair umpire due to a double invasion by the Turin player seen and reviewed in slow motion, the British-Finnish couple manages to get back to even. The concentration of the Azzurri, who are actually the Reds, given the color of their shirts, drops slightly, their rivals move ahead in the score for the first time, 6-5, and in the following game Simone and Andrea sink 0-40. A set that seems compromised, but the Italian duo manages to recover and grab the tie break which turns into a continuous reversal of situations, always one step away from winning the set and losing. Once again the “Bolessori” are the most concentrated: they cancel ten set points and close the tie break 18-16 after almost an hour and a half. Second set without breaks, more balanced, with the thrill of the delicate 7th game won by the Azzurri after the advantages. It’s a tie break again, in a stadium that supports Italy and enjoys the nighttime spectacle, but this time it’s the opponents who take home the set with a forehand from the baseline by Bolelli. Everything to do again but Heliovaara-Patten take courage and immediately take the lead with a break taking advantage of a small missed pass from the Azzurri who, 3-0 down, are still at risk but manage to move the score, 3-1. At 4-2 Bole and Vava try to get closer, but only manage to score a 15 in the seventh game. The situation is more concrete in the 9th game, with two break points for the Italians which do not materialize, Heliovaara-Patten serve for the match and become champions.
