Boekel family drama: Polish community raises money to transport bodies

A fundraising campaign has been started for the mother and son who died in the family tragedy in Boekel on Wednesday. The initiator wants to raise money to transport the bodies to Poland. “We also understand that people have mixed feelings about this, but we do it for the relatives.”

The shock is still great in Boekel after last Wednesday’s family tragedy. In a house on Dotterbloem, a mother stabbed her son to death and her daughter was seriously injured in the stabbing. The woman died later that afternoon after she crashed into a truck in Wilbertoord.

Wioletta Nowak, an acquaintance of the family, started the fundraising campaign. “It is a bit familiar here in Brabant among Poles. We know a lot about each other,” Nowak explains. “This has a big impact on us as a Polish community.”

With the fundraiser Nowak wants to help the relatives during this difficult period. “They already have so much on their minds to deal with all of this,” Nowak explains. “We hope to support them with this, because it is a considerable amount to bring the bodies to Poland, especially if you are not insured.”

“We understand the criticism, but we really do this for the family.”

In total, 2,500 euros are needed to transport the bodies and that is a considerable amount. “The equivalent is 10,000 zloty and that is really a lot of money in Poland,” says Nowak. “Most people there often only earn 700 euros per month.”

Nowak started the fundraising campaign (FYI: 4 zloty is 1 euro) on Saturday, but it has also received a lot of criticism. “Of course we understand that. We are raising money for a mother who killed her son, but the family also has the right to transport the bodies to Poland. We are really doing this for them.”

It is not yet known when the bodies will be transported. According to Nowak, an appointment still needs to be made with the mortuary in Poland. Although she says that won’t last long.
