The HSV experienced some victories in the DFB Cup-and many embarrassment. Eppingen, Osnabrück or Jena added bitter bankruptcy to the proud Hamburgers. A review.

The HSV starts the DFB Cup at FK Pirmasens on Saturday (1 p.m./Sky). The fifth division looks like a easy lot, but the Hamburgers have often embarrassed themselves with outsiders. The triple cup winner HSV once even experienced the infamous “mother of all cup sensations”. T-Online looks back on some of the most bitter defeats of the DFB Cup winner in the competition.

October 26, 1974: The Hamburger SV staggered in the Bundesliga, was only in 17th place. VfB Eppingen, on the other hand, started as a promoted in the 1st Amateur League Nordbaden. For the first time, amateurs were allowed to take part in the DFB Cup-the third division team pulled the big one.

The Hamburgers expected a clear victory. Coach Kuno Klötzer sent a prominent team around Rudi Kargus onto the field. Your opponents: largely unknown players like Gerd Störzer. The first goal was only after an hour – Eppingen’s keeper Volker Gebhard threw far on Störzer, who broke through right and hit the short corner.

Ten minutes later, Störzer used a mistake from Kargus, overwhelmed the HSV defense-2-0. The shock was deep in the favorite. Horst Bertl shortened to 1: 2, it was not enough for more. The game went down in history as the “mother of all cup sensations”.

Ten years after the end of Eppingen, the HSV met SC Geislingen in the DFB Cup on September 1, 1984. The Swabians had just climbed into the third division – like their model from Nordbaden. 7,000 spectators flocked to the Eybacher valley stadium to see the runner -up from Hamburg. But Goliath became David: HSV had no chance in a playful and combative manner.

Wolfgang Haug (29th) and Klaus Perfetto (70th) succeeded. “Hey, Ha, Ho – Hamburg is Ko,” it echoed through the stadium. The HSV stars around Felix Magath humiliated from the square. The German press agency spoke of a “Waterloo” moment. At SC Geislingen, on the other hand, the sparkling wine flowed.

For the DFB Cup game against MSV Duisburg, HSV returned to the Rothenbaum on August 19, 1989. Only 6,100 spectators had bought tickets – too little for the Volkspark. The second division team dominated the Ruhr area on the square and won 4: 2.
