According to the Thai armed forces, Thailand carried out air strikes near the border with Cambodia on Monday, following clashes that left a Thai soldier dead and four colleagues injured. Both countries hold each other responsible for the flare-up of violence. The Thai military reported that Cambodian units opened fire at several family locations with light weapons, machine guns, mortars and artillery. Thailand responded with its own ground fire and air strikes, which it said were within the framework of international law and were intended to defend national sovereignty. Earlier fighting in July left more than forty people dead, prompting a ceasefire that is now under pressure.
