Black and white photography fits IJmuiden like a coat: exhibition in Visserhallen

The ZwartWit exhibition in IJmuiden is like the port itself: it leaves nothing to the imagination. It is what it is. About twenty photographers exhibit their black and white photos in the Visserhallen. Harm van de Poel is one of the few who sought it close to home. He made his sculptures in IJmuiden.

Van de Poel, born in Den Helder and living in Haarlem, has his studio in the White Theater in IJmuiden. It is the basis from which he searches for the rawness of IJmuiden. It is there for the taking and so he usually comes back with a satisfied feeling.

“The industrial, the people. It’s beautiful here,” he says. In the Visserhallen he exhibits life-size photos of the Polish fish smoker Mattheus. Van de Poel: “I came into contact with him through a friend of his and I immediately saw that he has a good head. When he posed and I printed it, I knew immediately that it was a good photo. At least, I think so. .”

Place of interest

When Van de Poel is at work, he is a sight to behold. He photographs with an analog camera with a black sheet over his head. It is an intensive and time-consuming way of working, but the result pays for everything. “I like the photos better than digital image and I also like the whole craft process.”

The photos of Van de Poel and his colleagues can be seen until September 25 in the Visserhallen in IJmuiden.
