The German shoe manufacturer Birkenstock remains on course for expansion in Italy. On Wednesday the company opened a new store in the center of Bologna.

Birkenstock now offers its products in an area of 130 square meters at Via Farini 3. In addition to the traditional brand’s classics, the range also includes, according to a statement, “modern closed shoe models, seasonal designs, shoe care products, accessories and skin care products from the ‘Care Essentials’ range.”

The furnishings were specifically tailored to the location: It references the famous historic brick architecture of Bologna’s old town. The concept of the store is “an homage to terracotta,” explained Birkenstock. “The typical building material of Bologna can be found in the floors and several artifacts, which were made mainly from clay by one of the last traditional earth builders – as well as the one meter long footbed that adorns one of the walls.”

In addition, elements made of rammed earth as well as “aged leather” and “naturally weathered wood” were used to make the historical environment tangible in the store.
