In a modest room in Sint-Brixius-Rode, a stone’s throw from Eddy Merckx’s house, this morning the book Eddy Merckx became. The ultimate biography presented. Author Johny Vansevenant, former Wetstraat journalist and from Lichtervelde, looks back on the life and career of the cycling legend.
Merckx, who is considered the greatest cyclist of all time with more than 500 victories over his record, was visibly emotional by the tribute.
“For me that is a certain pride. That is pleasing me,” Merckx said. “It is not that I ask for that, but it is something incredible. Something that stays with it. I am very grateful for that.”
