The president of Federtennis takes stock of the 2025 edition: “Almost 100 million in tax revenue for 13.8 million in contributions. With Abodi we will address the issue of the future of the tournament”. In Turin in 2026 and almost certainly in 2027. Then Milan hypothesis

November 16 – 4.36pm – TURIN

The latest edition of the ATP Finals generated an economic impact of 591 million euros (source Boston Consulting Group), a social impact of 386 million (source Open Economics) and recorded 230 thousand paying spectators (+8% compared to 2024 and +93% from 2021). “Above all – remarks the president of Fitp, Angelo Binaghi – it has produced a tax revenue of almost 100 million and is almost seven times higher than the contribution of 13.7 million received from the State”. The success of the Turin event lies in these numbers, all of which have been constantly growing since 2021, the year of the start of this Italian cycle. Data that makes the president of the Piedmont Region, Alberto Cirio, and the mayor of Turin, Stefano Lo Russo, say that “our territory has all it takes to continue hosting the Finals until 2030”.

Turin or Milan

The headquarters will certainly remain Turin in 2026 and, almost certainly, also in 2027. Then the hypothesis of a relay with Milan could arise. But there is a knot to untie upstream. In August, the Sports Decree, converted into law, redesigned the governance, placing the public company Sport and Health alongside Fitp: the government, in exchange for a commitment of 97.5 million for the five-year period 2026-30, which is decisive for obtaining the extension of the contract with the ATP, intends to be fully involved in the management. “A new problem has arisen – Binaghi does not hide -. Today the Minister of Sport, Andrea Abodi, will be our guest for the final, in the next few weeks we will talk with the government: the application of the law, in one way or another, will lead to discussions on the venue. The state contribution makes the event sustainable without major difficulties and could indeed allow the event to continue to develop, creating a multiplier effect all year round in all territories. Tennis, today, is the best possible investment in sport for the State Italian. The future venue? I don’t know where the new sports hall in Milan is and whether, as some say, there are connectivity problems with the city. However, I do know that one of the secrets of the success of the Turin Finals lies in the ability of the local institutions to tackle the organizational machine with method and rigor”.

boom practitioners

In the meantime, the racket sports system – also in the wake of events such as the Finals – is enjoying the boom of recent years. According to Nielsen research, conducted on the population range between 16 and 69 years old, tennis and padel are the most popular sports in Italy behind football: 19.8 million fans (football 21.6; then volleyball 14.5 and athletics 13.6) and 6.2 million practitioners (football 6.5; then swimming 5.5 and cycling 3.9). “Since we started in Turin, in 2021, the delta of tennis and padel fans compared to football has decreased from 39% to 8%, that of practitioners from 20% to 5%. Thanks to the results of our athletes, with Sinner, Musetti and Paolini among the top 8 in the world, and to the organizational work, we have taken a further step forward in our goal of becoming the most popular sport in Italy. We are getting there.” Binaghi, after observing that SuperTennis has exceeded for the first time the million people who watch the channel for at least one minute every day, also launched a new initiative for Fitp members: the card will be transformed into a sort of ATM that will allow affiliates and members to exchange money at no cost and for the Federation to reduce administrative costs by 700 thousand euros per year.
