After the premiere of the second part of the Billy Joel documentary “And So It Goes”, the “Piano Man” published a huge accompanying album with 155 songs on digital platforms. This contains: previously unpublished material and more.
Music from Joel’s archives can never be heard about the five-hour HBO documentary. Starting with the Long Island rock band The Hassles to orchestral and instrumental works, starting with his early days.
“And so it goes” as a musical counterpart to the document
The seven -hour playlist “And So It Goes” is a “musical accompanying piece” for documentation. It contains dozens of previously unpublished live recordings and demo versions, including historical moments such as Joels’s very first live performance of his epic piece “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”. This was recorded on May 6, 1977 at CW Post College on Long Island.
The soundtrack also contains album tracks from Joel’s catalog and in some cases personal introductions by the artist to the songs. “‘Big Shot’ was a hangover song,” explains Joel in the introduction to this title. “I don’t know how often I woke up in the morning and found that I was an idiot the evening before, I was miserable, I had a hangover. In the “Rolling Stone” review of the two-part documentary, David Browne wrote: “Despite all his weaknesses, his call as a ‘snot spoon’ of pop music, as a critic called him, Joel remains a strange, almost personable, almost lovable when the credits are running.” It also says: “Unlike most of his gray rock colleagues, who have their say in his saga, he really looks like someone with whom you would like to drink something. And that, even if you fear that he tilts the drink on your lap when you say the wrong one.”
