Bettina Jarasch wants to lead the next Berlin government

The Green Senator for Environment and Mobility, Bettina Jarasch, has announced her claim to become the next governing mayor. She also addressed her tense relationship with the government.

“I would like to continue to govern with red-red, but I would like to lead the next government because I also believe that there needs to be a change at the top in this city,” said Jarasch on Wednesday evening in the RBB “Special” on the repeat of the House of Representatives election .

When asked about her relationship with the current Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) and public differences in recent weeks, Jarasch said: “You can argue. What matters is whether you’re able to speak up afterwards and say “sponge over it and move on”.

In this regard, she can only say on the subject of trust: “We managed that quite well a few times. All in all, you have to say that we have already mastered a few crises.”

Jarasch: Clarify the chaotic administrative situation

When it comes to organizing the elections in Berlin, Jarasch still sees an urgent need for reform: “We have to ensure that a senator who is responsible for an election is really responsible,” said the Green politician. It’s not like that in Berlin. “And it can’t stay like this,” said Jarasch.

“We have an administrative situation in Berlin in which it is not clear on such a central issue as a democratic election, who is organizing it, what does the supervision that the senator has mean?” That shouldn’t be the case. It must be clear: central issue, central responsibility. “And that requires reforms. And I think that’s going to be a topic we’ll be talking about a lot in the coming weeks.”

The Berlin Constitutional Court decided on Wednesday that the Berlin elections to the House of Representatives and to the district parliaments of September 2021 must be repeated completely due to the numerous election glitches. In the repeat election, the majority could change significantly. In last fall’s election, the SPD came in first, just ahead of the Greens.
