That’s so bitter for the Berlin tour hero Simon Geschke (36). On the last difficult Pyrenean stage he was no longer able to defend his mountain jersey and lost it to the leader Jonas Vingegaard. So he can’t take it off.

After 26 years, Denmark can probably celebrate a tour winner again. In 1996 it was Bjarne Riis, now the likely winner is Vingegaard. And because Jonas Vingegaard won not only the yellow jersey but also the mountain jersey at the 109th Tour de France gifts blank. And still have to carry it on.

Vingegaard still doesn’t want congratulations – despite a lead of 3:26 minutes. “I don’t want to talk about that. We can talk when I’ve survived the next two stages,” said the 25-year-old. The last obstacle on Saturday is the individual time trial over 40.7 kilometers to Rocamadour.

He fought his way through the Alps and Pyrenees in a mountain jersey, but on the last mountain stage, it was the 18th of the tour, Simon Geschke was at the end of his strength. He had to let go at the Col d’Aubisque, so that Vingegaard now has 72 points and passed the native of Berlin (64). “The mountain jersey is for the best mountaineer, he’s wearing it now,” said Geschke honestly.

Bitter: Geschke has to keep wearing the red dotted jersey because he is second behind Vingegaard in the mountains classification. And the Dane can hardly wear both jerseys.
