Berlin senator regrets that masks are no longer compulsory when shopping

Berlin’s health senator Ulrike Gote (Greens) regretted that she could not declare the city a corona hotspot in order to order further mask wearing.

“The situation in Berlin is currently not such that we could easily determine the two criteria required by law (…),” said Ulrike Gote on RBB Inforadio on Thursday. The infection situation in Berlin is lower than the national average and is currently hardly changing. And the situation in the hospitals is tense, but there is no risk of overload. “Unfortunately, we cannot legally explain the hotspot.”

Hamburg, on the other hand, had determined itself as a corona hotspot. But there are also higher and significantly increasing numbers there, said Gote. Developments in Berlin will be closely monitored over the next few weeks.

With a corona incidence of almost 954 new infections per 100,000 people in seven days, Berlin has the lowest value of all federal states. The value has fallen again in the past few days.

From Friday, masks will no longer have to be worn in shops in Berlin. Masks are still compulsory on trains and buses, in doctor’s offices, hospitals and old people’s homes. And many theaters, courts and companies also insist on the mask requirement.

Berlin is thus adopting the requirements of the Federal Infection Protection Act. The federal government’s decision in mid-March to lift most of the corona rules had been criticized by several federal states.
