Berlin Senate does not exclude spectators in sport, up to 3,000 fans – rbb – regional

Sports in Berlin don’t have to be prepared for so-called ghost games. Berlin leaves from December 28th a special way that is less strict than that of Federal and state on Tuesday announced resolutions: 3,000 fans are allowed to watch sporting events outdoors, 2,000 spectators are allowed in halls. The Berlin Senate decided on Thursday.

The 2G plus rule applies to events

The prerequisite is a “corresponding general hygiene concept”. This must provide at least mechanical ventilation in closed rooms. In addition, such events must generally take place according to 2G-plus rules: They are only open to vaccinated and convalescent people who also have to show a current negative corona test. Wearing an FFP2 mask is also compulsory.

For all other events, the same applies as before: They are forbidden outdoors with more than 1,000 people present at the same time, and indoors with more than 200 people present at the same time. The 2G regulation continues to apply here.

“We have decided to proceed in a measured manner, weighing up the risks and protective measures,” said Berlin’s Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) on Thursday. The aim is to maintain activities in culture, sport or business as far as possible, albeit under restricted conditions. “We have come to the conclusion that this is still better than a complete cancellation.”

Foxes and volleys “surprised” by decision

An assessment that Berlin’s professional sport should also welcome, but which hardly anyone had expected. The manager of the Berlin Bundesliga handball team Füchse Berlin, Bob Hanning, reacted with satisfaction to the Senate’s decision: “We are surprised and think it’s good that at least a limited number of spectators are allowed,” said Hanning when asked by rbb | 24. He would like “that the overall political decisions are made with so much judgment,” added the long-time sports official.

For his club even 2,000 spectators in the hall are “economically extremely important”. For the players it is a different situation when there is at least a “basic noise in the mood”. The foxes could also fulfill their obligations towards the sponsors.

Kaweh Niroomand, manager of the BR Volleys, was “very surprised” by the decision of the Berlin Senate when asked by rbb. Everything has already been prepared in the club to cancel season ticket holders for the upcoming home games at the beginning of January, Niroomand reported. He said he was pleased with the decision, but not primarily from an economic point of view: “Every spectator is good, especially for the players, as a support.” With a view to the pandemic situation, he also emphasized: “We all have to help and be careful in the current situation.”

Other federal states also continue to allow spectators

In the course of Thursday, other federal states partially followed the Berlin approach. In Hamburg too, spectators are allowed to attend sporting events, up to 5,000 in the open air – for example in football stadiums – and 2,500 in halls. The 2G rule is also a prerequisite here. Schleswig-Holstein decided against a stricter rule: a maximum of 1,000 spectators are allowed here – indoors and outdoors.

The federal-state meeting advocated ghost games

The federal and state governments agreed on Tuesday that “major national events” must take place without spectators by December 28 at the latest. However, it has not been defined what exactly falls under this term. Berlin and Brandenburg then decided to take different approaches on the issue.

In Brandenburg, the tightened corona measures will apply from December 27th. If more than 1,000 people come together at major events, these are no longer allowed.
