Belgians are most annoyed by speeders and illegal dumpers in their neighbourhood Interior

Belgians experience inappropriate speed and illegal dumping and litter as the most problematic in their neighbourhood. This is evident today from the results of the Security Monitor 2021, a large-scale population survey by the federal police in collaboration with the local police, the Federal Public Service Home Affairs and local authorities.

The top six neighborhood problems are dominated by traffic problems. Ahead of first place with 67 percent: unadapted speed. Aggressive driving (46 percent), annoying parking (44 percent), noise nuisance from traffic (39 percent) and nuisance caused by heavy transport (38 percent) follow in third, fourth, fifth and sixth place. The only non-traffic problem in the top six, illegal dumping and litter, is second at 50 percent.

After the top six, various forms of theft are perceived as problematic: domestic burglaries (seventh place), bicycle and scooter thefts (ninth place) and thefts from or damage to cars (tenth place). Theft is generally perceived as less problematic than in the previous survey in 2018. This is probably a side effect of the corona measures, says the federal police, because the crime statistics also show a clear decrease in the number of burglaries and thefts during the corona crisis. Finally, noise nuisance from neighbors ranks eighth among the most important neighborhood problems.

For the tenth edition of the Security Monitor, at the end of 2021, almost 100,000 Belgians aged 15 or older completed an extensive questionnaire about neighborhood problems, feelings of (un)safety, victimization, willingness to report and police work. Almost 400,000 Belgians received the questionnaire, a quarter completed it. The previous survey took place in 2018.
