Belgen in Oekraïne done: ‘When my family never watched over me, I wanted to meet you’

Frederik De Roeck (34) from Kiev: ‘Zonder my Belgian family zou ik mee vechten’

“We lifted the neck cover on our spools and kept our lives aft.” Nadat een vriendin Frederik De Roeck donderdagochtend opbelde om hem voor de naderende Russe troepen te waarschuwen, besloot hij om samen met zijn partner weg te trekken uit zijn woonplaats in Kiev. “We zijn op weg naar de Roemeense grens. Dat country is lid van de NAVO and we hope dat Russia daar niet zal durven toe te slaan.”

The Roeck and zijn next konden net op tijd vertrekken, want other files later bemoeilijkten de uittocht van vele burgers. “I’m going to meet my Oekraïense vrienden the achterblijven. Conings vertelt dat veel burgers naar het plateau trekken omdat ze erop rekenen dat de kans op een aanslag daar minder groot is.
