Before World Championships in Athletics: Suspension of hurdles world record holder Amusan lifted

Status: 08/17/2023 10:55 p.m

The Nigerian hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan is allowed to defend her title over 100 meters hurdles at the World Championships in Budapest starting on Saturday (19.08.2023) after her provisional suspension for violations of the anti-doping regulations was lifted.

Although, according to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), the 26-year-old could not be reached for an unannounced doping test three times within a year, contrary to the regulations, Amusan has for the disciplinary tribunal “committed no violation of the rules”.

“We are disappointed with the decision”, AIU Director Brett Clothier commented on the verdict. His organization reserves the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Clothier said.

Amusan claims to be a “clean athlete”.

Amusan, who set her world record of 12.12 seconds at the World Championships in Eugene a year ago, was suspended at the beginning of the second half of July.

The African has since claimed that she made no mistakes: “I am a clean athlete and I am tested regularly by the AIU, maybe more than usual – I was tested within days of my third ‘missed test’. I have faith that things will be decided in my favour and I can compete at the World Championships in August.”
