Before the top game at FC Bayern

With a new constellation that has not been seen for a long time, FC Bayern and BVB are entering the very hot phase of the Bundesliga season, which will start next week after the international break: Borussia Dortmund greets from the top of the table, Bayern are the new hunters. The direct duel between the top German clubs on April 1 (from 6:30 p.m.) in Munich is likely to be all the more explosive – that’s what ex-world footballer Lothar Matthäus also thinks.

“There hasn’t been a constellation like this for a very long time. The fact that BVB are coming to Munich as leaders on matchday 26 makes the whole thing even more exciting,” says the German record national player on “Sky” already looking forward to the Bundesliga classic in the next week.

According to Matthäus, BVB has been showing outstanding performances on the pitch for weeks, paired with the necessary bit of luck. “Dortmund have had a great run, but also had a few games where you would have said Bayern-Dusel earlier. It’s a bit as if the clubs had reversed roles,” said the 61-year-old, who has played seven games himself became German champion with FC Bayern.

The outcome of the game on April 1 in the Allianz Arena could determine how the entire Bundesliga season goes, suspects the 1990 world champion captain.

Mood at BVB “slightly better” than at Bayern

Should FC Bayern win their home game against the Black and Yellows, “they will win the title,” believes Matthäus. He continued: “A draw would be extremely exciting and if Dortmund win four points they will be German champions.”

The TV expert is certain that the exuberant euphoria that could already be observed in the eastern Ruhr area in the last championship years in 2011 and 2012 would carry the team of head coach Edin Terzic through the rest of the season in the event of a win at Bayern: “Will win BVB our classic, until the end of the season nothing else will be talked about in Dortmund but football and the fans and the whole city will do everything for the trophy. The atmosphere should currently be a little better in Dortmund than in Munich.”

However: BVB’s last Bundesliga win at FC Bayern was nine years ago.
