The Spaniard made it to seventh place in the world rankings-and caused a sensation in Hamburg in 1990 when he made Germany look old in Germany.

The former Spanish tennis professional Juan Aguilera died at the age of 63. This was announced by the Spanish tennis association on Tuesday. Aguilera had its most successful time in the 1980s and early 1990s and reached seventh in the world rankings.

The Spanish association wrote in its message on Tuesday: “Catalane Joan Aguilera, one of the great Spanish tennis players of the 1980s and early 1990s, died of the consequences of an illness in Barcelona at the age of 63.

Aguilera was trained in Barcelona and, as a junior, reached the semi -finals of the most prestigious youth tournament in 1980, the Orange Bowl in the USA. Aguilera celebrated his greatest success on the ATP tour in 1990 at the Masters tournament in Hamburg. In the final he clearly defeated Boris Becker 6: 0, 6: 1, 7: 6 and caused a sensation. It was also the first tournament victory of a Spaniard at the master level. Becker, who celebrated great success as a German tennis star, was denied a clay court title during his career.

The success in Hamburg, on the path of which Aguilera, in addition to Becker, also turned off the world -class players Michael Chang and Jim Courier, was also his last of a total of five tournament victories. Already in 1991 he ended his career at the age of only 28, in which he made it to seventh place in the world rankings (1984). Aguilera then worked as a coach in his home region Barcelona.
