Beatles manager Brian Epstein honored with statue

A memorial to Brian Epstein will be erected in Liverpool. The city of Liverpool this week approved the construction of a statue to honor the Beatles’ manager, who also oversaw Gerry and The Pacemakers.

As “NME” reports, the memorial is to be erected near his family’s former record shop in Whitechapel. The £100,000 sculpture was sculpted by designer Andy Edwards and Jane Robbins, a cousin of Paul McCartney. She told the BBC that Macca was enthusiastic about the first draft.

Paul McCartney is touched

Robbins: “I don’t know if he actually had a tear in his eye, but he was very touched when he saw the dough and I think that speaks volumes. When you get someone’s likeness, people often cry because that person is gone.”

Epstein discovered the Beatles in 1961 after attending a gig at the Cavern Club. He worked with the band until 1967, when he died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 32. The death of their manager was a deep turning point for John, Paul, George and Ringo. A planned biopic entitled Midas Man will soon bring his life story to the big screen. Just a few years ago, the first deal Epstein signed with the Beatles was auctioned for a record £275,000.
