The Telekom Baskets Bonn continued their run in front of their home crowd on Wednesday evening. They celebrated their third win in the third home game in a row.
Overall, Bonn’s 101:83 (50:42) win against Rasta Vechta was their fourth success in a row. The guests, who had recently stopped their series of defeats against Ulm, made good approaches, but there was clearly not enough resistance from them, especially physically.
Coach Marko Stankovic’s team started the game confidently and forced their opponents to lose four balls in the first two and a half minutes. After that, Vechta got into the game better. Both teams now went at a high pace and had a good hit rate.
First double-digit lead after nine minutes
For a short time it looked as if Bonn could pull away a little. The Rhinelanders led 22:16 after almost seven minutes, but Vechta countered with a three-point throw. Because the Baskets were extremely attentive defensively during this phase, they managed to gain a small cushion until shortly before the end of the first quarter: after nine minutes, they led by double digits for the first time.
Vechta impressively showed that this is not the case in basketball: the guests started the second quarter with two successful three-pointers, which meant that after eleven minutes it was suddenly only 32:29 from the Bonn team’s perspective. It was now a balanced duel – in terms of points, but also in terms of rebounds and hit rate.
First Bonn, then Vechta with a 7-0 run
After a furious start from the guests, Bonn fought their way back into the area and won numerous free throws. Shortly before the break, the Bonn team managed a 7-0 run through which they regained their double-digit lead. The Baskets finally went into halftime with a 50:42 lead.
Apparently Rasta coach Christian Held found the right words in the dressing room, because his team came back to the floor much more grippy and aggressive. The reward was a 7-0 run that brought the guests back to within one point after 15 minutes. Bonn recovered in the middle of the third quarter. Annoyed the guests with strong blocks and regained a little more control of the game. With a 42 percent three-point rate after three quarters, the Baskets also appeared unusually strong from the outside against Vechta.
Bonn pulls away in the last quarter
Bonn went into the final section with a six point lead. And finally the Baskets put pressure on right from the start. However, Vechta now made things far too easy for the home team. The result, a good seven minutes before the end, was a 15-point lead for the first time. Even though the Bonn team didn’t succeed in everything offensively in the last few minutes, they still had no trouble getting the win over time. In the end the 100 point mark even fell.
Bamba scored a strong 23 points for Vechta – a new career best for him in the BBL. For the Bonn team, Garrett Jr. was the most accurate with 22 points.
First a break, then Oldenburg
The BBL is now going into a two-week international break. The Bonn team continues with an away game on March 6th. Kick-off at EWE Baskets Oldenburg is at 6:30 p.m.
