Alba Berlin suffered its second defeat in a row in the Basketball Bundesliga. A week after the defeat in Hamburg, the Berliners lost at home to runner-up Ratiopharm Ulm 66:67 (46:37), despite a long lead. This means that coach Pedro Calles’ team slips to sixth place. Norris Agbakoko with 15 points and Jack Kayil and Justin Bean with 14 points each were the best Berlin throwers.
Alba gives the game away in the final phase
As has happened so often this season, Alba didn’t get off to a good start. Nothing was successful offensively in front of the 9,173 spectators; after three and a half minutes the score was already 1:12. But then the hosts woke up and improved, especially in defense. They fought back with a 12:3 run and even took the lead for the first time shortly before the end of the first quarter (20:19).
The Ulm team were now only able to do little offensively – their long-range throws in particular were now barely falling. Alba attacked the guests very early and won the ball several times in the Ulm half. The guests tried hard, but also received a lot of foul whistles and had problems early on. Two and a half minutes before the break, Berlin’s lead reached double digits for the first time (43:33).
But after the break, Ulm also improved their defense and Alba hardly got any good shots. Shortly before the end of the third quarter, the hosts suddenly fell behind again after a long time, 52:53. Now it stayed tight until the end. The decision was only made at the last second when Kayil narrowly failed with the last throw.
