Bayern’s Thomas Tuchel served after defeat against Lazio

FC Bayern has now also lost in the Champions League. For Thomas Tuchel it was an evening to forget.

FC Bayern is threatened with an early exit in the Champions League. The German record champions lost the first leg of the round of 16 at Lazio Rome 0-1 (0-0) and are under considerable pressure before the second leg on March 5th.

That’s why coach Thomas Tuchel only had a few positive words left after the duel. “It’s frustrating. I think we lost the game. I don’t know if Lazio won it, we lost the game,” the coach said after the final whistle on the streaming service DAZN. And further: “We lost the thread and then did everything we could to ensure that we fell behind.”

Müller is also dissatisfied: “Too little cold-bloodedness”

According to Tuchel, the club had previously encouraged the team to keep going and “play forward more courageously. We started with two serious mistakes and completely lost confidence and rhythm. The second half was no longer good.”

Bayern fell behind due to a penalty kick. Dayot Upamecano’s entry into the penalty area against Lazio attacker Gustav, which was punished with a red card, was unnecessary, said Tuchel. The Bayern defender had “no need” to “make the move at all.” In his opinion, blocking the shot would have been enough, “we are putting ourselves on the losing road,” it continued.

According to the data service provider Opta, Tuchel suffered his tenth defeat in his 43rd competitive game as Bayern coach – that’s how many times his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann had lost in his 84 games.

Bayern’s veteran Thomas Müller said with a view to the second leg of the round of 16 in Munich on March 5th: “We’ll stay together and give everything in all competitions until the last second, and the opponents have to be prepared for that. And then we’ll see what we do get.”

The first half was good. But the team showed “too many insecurities” and “too little cold-bloodedness. Who says that things won’t look completely different in three weeks?!” continued Müller, who admitted in the interview: “We’re going in circles. We are not satisfied, that’s completely clear, and you can do it as far as I’m concerned.”
