Bayern Munich | “Could be an own goal”: Schalke legend warns Niklas Süle

Niklas Süle will leave FC Bayern on a free transfer at the end of the season. Schalke legend Huub Stevens is quite critical of the central defender’s decision.

After a total of five years, the FC Bayern chapter ends for Niklas Süle in the summer. As Munich confirmed on Wednesday, the national player’s expiring contract will not be extended. According to media reports, Süle is said to have rejected an offer for an annual salary of around ten million euros. But instead of staying at Bayern, the 26-year-old has to look for a new club.

Huub Stevens, who trained Süle at TSG Hoffenheim from October 2015 to February 2016, cannot fully understand his former protégé’s decision. “I’m very surprised that Niklas hasn’t extended his contract with Bayern. He’s playing well and is continuing to develop at Germany’s most successful club. To play 40 games at Bayern this season means something,” said the 68-year-old “sports1“.

Stevens: Süle makes a “giant leap” financially

At the same time, Stevens warned the defender: “It can be a risk for Niklas. It could be an own goal for him. But he’s mature enough. Maybe he has long since agreed to join a new club.”

The Schalke icon is sure that Süle will make a “giant leap” financially. “He doesn’t have to worry about his future anymore anyway.”

During their time together in Hoffenheim, the Dutchman got to know Süle as a professional with strong opinions. “He was already making idiosyncratic decisions, then I had to talk to him to convince him of something else. He also realized that at the time,” revealed Stevens, adding: “I’m curious to see where he ends up now.”

Chelsea FC and FC Barcelona are considered hot contenders for a commitment.
