Berlin (AP) – Bundesliga soccer club Bayer Leverkusen has signed the Iranian international Sardar Azmoun.

The centre-forward will not extend his contract with Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg, which expires in the summer, and will join the Werkself for the 2022/23 season. The 27-year-old Azmoun signed a contract until June 30, 2027, as Bayer announced.

Azmoun has won the championship three times in a row with Zenit and played regularly in the Champions League. He has played 60 international matches for Iran so far, scoring 39 goals.

“Sardar Azmoun has been one of the top scorers in the Russian league for years. With him, our offensive gets additional quality, Sardar will make our attack even more unpredictable and powerful,” said Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes.
