The British actor John Nolan died at the age of 87. The “Batman” and “Dunkirk” actor passed away on April 11, 2026, his family confirmed.

His wife Kim Hartman said goodbye with emotional words. Nolan was a “free spirit” who always lived according to his own rules, the British newspaper quoted her as saying.Mirror“He was a free spirit who always knew what he wanted and lived by his own rules – the only truly original thinker I have ever known. Articulate, intelligent and with an anarchic sense of humor, he was always willing to see both sides of an argument.”

His widow continued: “He was also the kindest person I ever knew – and animals loved him! John was a popular and talented teacher, whether explaining a Shakespeare monologue or showing how to swing a golf club, and he was deeply devoted to his family.”

Known from Christopher Nolan films and series

An audience of millions knew Nolan primarily from the series “Person of Interest,” in which he starred as the calm, controlled antagonist John Greer. The character developed into one of the central antagonists of the series over several seasons.

He also appeared regularly in the films of his nephew Christopher Nolan – including “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight Rises”, in which he played a board member of Wayne Enterprises. He was also seen in “Dunkirk” in a short but striking appearance.

Aside from the cinema, Nolan was primarily rooted in the theater. He worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theater, among others, and for decades belonged to the generation of actors who were less in the spotlight but formed the foundation of many productions. He was most recently seen in the series “Dune: Prophecy”. Nolan is survived by his wife, two children and several grandchildren.
