Moolenburgh says that it hurts him a lot to have to intervene in this way. “Of course I want to be the mayor of a very beautiful, hospitable seaside resort and I really, to put it in Amsterdam’s own words, feel bad that guests just come this way and deliberately spoil things.”
‘ME on the boulevard’
For several bathers, the events of last weekend are reason to respond with understanding to the extra police deployment. But some are critical, because they believe that action should have been taken earlier. They believe the police should have been ready in large numbers this weekend as well. “My opinion is that it is quite a weak case when it comes to the police,” says one woman.
A boy adds: “If I were mayor I would say: ME on the boulevard and clean it up here, because you know what it is? If you don’t do that, they won’t learn from it, right?”
The measure only applies today, but the municipality will work to declare a safety risk area more often on hot days.
