Bassist Herman Deinum passed away today. Deinum was the regular bassist of the Drenthe blues band Cuby + Blizzards for many years. He also made waves with the band Sweet d’ Buster. Deinum was born in Kampen and lived in Nijverdal for a long time.
Deinum was the bassist for Cuby + Blizzards from 1969 to 1972. He only played together with frontman Herman Brood for a short time, because Brood was kicked out of the band due to his substance use. His replacement, Helmig van der Vegt, already knew Deinum from their time together in the band Blues Dimension.
In 1972 the curtain fell (for the time being) on Cuby and the Blizzards. The heyday was behind the band. There was a fuss and the band members, including Deinum, wanted something new. Deinum continued his career at Cyril, Cyril Havermans’ band. In 1976 he joined Sweet d’Buster together with ex Cuby drummer Hans la Faille. In particular the band’s second LP, titled Friction, scored well.
After Sweet d’Buster also fell apart, Deinum joined the Harry Muskee Gang. In 1991 he founded his own Herman Deinum Blues band. Five years later, Deinum made a comeback under the leadership of Johan Derksen with Cuby + Blizzards. He took care of the rhythm there until 2010. In 2019, Deinum started the band Still Believe with his comrade La Faille, named after the famous song of the same name by Herman Brood.
