Bas Dost leaves Bruges with second national title

FOOTBALL – It was not Bas Dost’s season at Club Brugge, but the former FC Emmen striker still leaves Belgium with a top prize. This afternoon, the reigning champion won the league title again.

The 1-3 victory at Royal Antwerp was sufficient for the team of trainer Alfred Schreuder, who will exchange Bruges for Ajax this summer.

Dost will also leave Bruges next summer. The 32-year-old attacker does that a year and a half after his arrival. When the ex-international made the switch from Eintracht Frankfurt, his main motivation was to play in the Champions League. That happened, although Dost – in his opinion – was used far too often as a supersub in the biggest European tournament.

Also in competition, Dost was used less and less as a basic player. Where he was a permanent fixture in the second half of the competition last season and scored eight times in 13 matches, he was more and more a substitute this year. He started this year as a fixed value, but since February he mainly had to keep the bank warm. Still, he scored 12 times in 25 appearances.

It is not yet known where Dost will play next season. FC Emmen would like to bring him back to De Oude Meerdijk and sc Heerenveen is also seriously interested. A third serious club has now been added, namely the Turkish Besiktas. At that club, Dost must succeed Red Devil Michy Batshuayi. The striker was loaned to Besiktas by Chelsea, but will return to England.
