Ballon d’Or: Bundesliga quartet nominated – Messi is missing for the first time since 2005

The nominees for the 2022 Ballon d’Or were announced on Friday. The magazine “France Football”, which awards the prize for the world’s best footballer, goalkeeper and young professional together with FIFA, also shortlisted the Bundesliga professionals Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig), Sébastien Haller (BVB) and Joshua Kimmich and Sadio Mané (both Bayern Munich). Lionel Messi (PSG), who won the Ballon d’Or for the seventh time last year, is absent for the first time since 2005.

The winners of the Ballon d’Or, which has been awarded since 1956, are chosen by international specialist journalists. Between 2010 and 2015, the election took place under the umbrella of the world governing body FIFA, as a substitute for the election for World Player of the Year. “France Football” has been awarding the Golden Ball itself since 2016. There will be one change in the future: Instead of evaluating the performance of footballers per calendar year as before, the seasonal performance should be taken into account. In future, only representatives of the top 100 in the FIFA ranking list will be entitled to vote. In addition, the overall career should no longer be a criterion.
