AZ director Huiberts understands fans’ dissatisfaction, but is disappointed with short-sightedness

Maarten Martens gave the first training to AZ in the indoor hall on Thursday afternoon. The new (temporary) head coach of the Alkmaarders succeeds the dismissed Pascal Jansen. After the training, Martens and technical director Max Huiberts appeared in front of the camera to provide text and explanation. “We don’t make decisions based on white tissues,” said Huiberts.

“Things have not been going well for a long time,” Huiberts explains the dismissal of Pascal Jansen. The Alkmaar coach was fired yesterday. “After the winter break we did not see the intended changes and then you come to such a decision.”

Role of the fans

It is striking that Huiberts said last week that the ‘white handkerchiefs’ were unjustified. During the last few home games, many Alkmaar supporters waved white handkerchiefs to indicate that they were done with Jansen. “Sometimes you have to be patient, but I understand that fans are dissatisfied.” Afterwards, Huiberts made it clear that the dissatisfaction of the AZ fans did not play a role in the decision to kick Jansen out.

Every supporter and football follower saw that things were going less well for AZ lately. Yet there is also a lot of sympathy for Jansen, because the selection has undergone a major overhaul last summer. Players such as Tijjani Reijnders, Milos Kerkez and Jesper Karlsson left Alkmaar and Jansen received talented and inexperienced football players in return.

Irritation at Huiberts

In recent weeks, Huiberts himself has also looked critically in the mirror. He did not want to say what he could do better, but he did say that he is a bit irritated. “It is far too short-sighted to say that we have sold a lot of players, because every year we lose a lot of players. And that not only applies to AZ, but also to many other clubs. We simply bring in players who are unknown for the general public.”

AZ will visit PEC Zwolle on Saturday. And that means that Martens is ultimately responsible for the first time. The Alkmaarders are currently in 4th place after 17 games.
