“We have Carlo.” The former Juventus defender, in an interview with The Athletic, focused on the figure of the new Selecao coach and recalled his years at Juventus

“It wasn’t an easy period after the last World Cup, because we had a lot of problems. We changed coaches three times and we didn’t play well or get the results we hoped for. Sometimes football doesn’t make sense. In Brazil there was little faith in the national team.” The photograph that Danilo offers of his Selecao is this. Sharp. But now, on the eve of his third participation in a World Cup, there is a newfound optimism in the team and in the country more generally. Also thanks to the presence of an expert profile on the bench like Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti added value

“Before, we were expected to win every match 3-0, also playing good football. But every team we face prepares well and defends with great organization. It’s not easy. However, we have many quality players – explained Danilo in an interview with The Athletic -. We have a team that combines young talents and experienced players. And we have Carlo Ancelotti. We can put all these elements together and try to win the World Cup. Ancelotti is like Cristiano Ronaldo. He is one of the most famous people in football and yet he lives his days with us like a normal person. He is humble, and this is one of the most important qualities of champions. He has won a lot, but he works as if he had never won anything.”

black and white memories

“I played for Juventus in a transition period between great successes and moments of difficulty. I was more experienced, calmer and more focused on myself and on football. Juve was fantastic and important for me because my children grew up there. The people treated me well, I felt loved and I tried to reciprocate this affection. Furthermore, I played with Gianluigi Buffon, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini: from them I learned how Italians live and interpret football, with all their passion and resilience”. A team in which he also found himself playing together with CR7 (again), mentioned before: “Yes, and I had already played with him at Real Madrid. In Turin he was more experienced, but he continued to score many goals and was always an exemplary professional. He continually encouraged you and pushed you to give your best both in training and in the match. People think that Cristiano is some kind of extraterrestrial, but in reality he was a normal person, who laughed and had fun with his family. Obviously, however, Cristiano lives for football and dedicates almost everything he does to improving himself every day.”
