13 years ago, the first “Avatar” film appeared on the big screen. The sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” was released on December 14, 2022 – and has since made more than 129 million euros after 68 days in cinemas, according to the Walt Disney Company. And this despite director James Cameron’s ongoing criticism from Indigenous audiences for, among other things, his “white savior” narrative, alleged use of stereotypes and under-representation of Indigenous people.
Roger Crotti, manager of the Disney company, said on LinkedIn that the film’s earnings break “the 25-year-old record as the highest-grossing film of all time in Germany” set by “Titanic” in 1998. The ship drama was also directed by James Cameron.

Globally, the “Avatar” sequel has surpassed the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office. Thus, the strip is number 1 of the world’s most successful films of 2022. In the list of the world’s most successful films of all time, it is number 4. The box office of both films together is currently around Estimated $5.1 billion.
