Australian Open: Hanfmann and Koepfer miss the doubles final

As of: January 25, 2024 8:55 a.m

The German tennis doubles Yannick Hanfmann and Dominik Koepfer narrowly missed the final of the Australian Open. The duo lost to the Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori on Thursday (January 25th, 2024) in the match tiebreak of the third set with 3:6, 6:3, 6:7 (5:10) and had to give up the dream of the first Grand Prix. Give up the Slam final for now.

Despite having little shared doubles experience, Hanfmann and Koepfer appeared perfectly coordinated over long stretches in Melbourne.

In the final on Saturday, the Italians will face 43-year-old Indian Rohan Bopanna and Australian Matthew Ebden.

Run for Hanfmann and Koepfer ends in the semi-finals in Melbourne

In the quarterfinals, Bolelli/Vavassori had already eliminated the German Davis Cup double Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz. Hanfmann and Koepfer were eliminated in the singles in the first round and then surprisingly caused a sensation in the doubles. In the second round they defeated the Australian defending champions Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler.
