Solid performance for the No. 3 seeds in the men’s doubles. The blue pair knocks out the Spaniards in one hour and 49 minutes with a score of 6-3 7-6. In the next round they will face the Portuguese Borges/Cabral
Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open doubles tournament for the second consecutive year. The Azzurri, seeded number 3, defeated the all-Spanish pair of Martinez and Munar in two sets (6-3 7-6 (6) the score in one hour and 49 minutes), saving a set point and taking at home a less obvious victory than the score suggests. Munar is a growing singles player and Martinez is a doubles specialist, and especially in the second they really played point to point against one of the best pairs in the world like the one formed by the two Italians.
the match
—
First set where Bolelli and Vavassori were concentrated from the first to the last point, with the decisive break arriving at 3-2, thanks to a less than perfect game from the Spaniards on serve but with the Azzurri very careful to take advantage of it. At 5-2 the 2024 finalists also had two balls to close the set, which was closed, on their serve, the following game. In the second set, a small missed pass from the Italian pair and a break from the Spaniards, who fly 3-0, but it’s a flash in the pan, given that the counterbreak arrives at 3-1. At 4-4 and 5-5 Bolelli and Vavassori fail to achieve another four break points (there will be ten in total at the end of the match, only two converted), and we go to the tie break. At 5-5 Munar’s sensational passer sends the Spaniards to set point, but Martinez sends the next volley to Sydney, it goes to 7-6 for the Azzurri and Vavassori seals the victory at the net and with it the quarter-finals, where he and Bolelli will face the all-Portuguese duo Borges/Cabral.
