Australia surprisingly wins the World Cup of Darts

Australia has surprisingly won the team world championship of darts professionals for the first time. Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock defeated tournament favorites Wales 3-1 in Frankfurt am Main.

First, Heta defeated ex-world champion Gerwyn Price 4-0 in the first singles game, then veteran Whitlock followed suit with a 4-2 win against Jonny Clayton.

The outsider got the third and decisive point through Heta, who also defeated Clayton in singles (4:2). Wales had won the doubles 4-3.

Earlier in the evening, Heta and Whitlock had defeated the English seeders (Michael Smith, James Wade) 2-0. For Australia it was after 2012 (already with Whitlock) the second final participation in the major competition.

Wales also easily made it into the final, the 2-0 win over the Netherlands without the injured Michael van Gerwen was safe. Germany lost 2-0 to Wales in the quarter-finals on Sunday afternoon.

After England, the Netherlands (four titles each), Scotland (two titles) and Wales (one title), Australia is the fifth victorious nation in the so-called World Cup, which this time was held in the Eissporthalle in Frankfurt.
