Fierce sword fights at sea, cannon explosions and burning ships. Monnickendam is slowly catching his breath after a successful commemoration of the Battle of the Zuiderzee. 450 years ago the Beggars won from the Spaniards and that was celebrated in the city for the past ten days.
The highlight of the party took place this weekend: a direct confrontation between the Spaniards and the Beggars on the water off Monnickendam. The whole city turned out for it, the residents dressed in historical clothing.
