Germany’s tennis star Alexander Zverev surprisingly missed the semi -finals at the clay court tournament in Rio de Janeiro.
The top seed finalist of the Australian Open lost to the Argentinian Francisco Comesana after 2:31 hours with 6: 4, 3: 6, 4: 6 and left in the quarter -finals like in the previous week in Buenos Aires.
“It is really a shame to end the tournament like this, because I was in the position to win the third set,” Zverev said at the press conference after the defeat: “But in the end I lost the game all by myself.”
Drones above the square
With 31 degrees and high humidity, the world ranking second struggled against the courageous number 86 in the world in the first set, but after the decisive break, got the first round a little later. Zverev was not able to get the drones flying over the square again and again – before the service game to 6: 4, he tried to shoot a drone with the ball with a smile.
4: 1 leadership in the third set played
In the second set, the Argentinier played better, but the mistakes at Zverev were piling up. The decision had to be made in the third round. At 4: 1, the German was already clearly on the course of the victory, but Comesana managed the comeback.
With the 500 tournament in Brazil, Zverev wanted to get further match practice on his favorite covering. In March, however, the master’s tournament in Indian Wells and Miami will go back to the hard court before the European clay court season starts. At the French Open (May 25th to June 8th) Zverev is striving for his first triumph at a Grand Slam.
