Atlético Madrid wins derby against Real Madrid: Ancelotti protects core staff

Ancelotti protects core staff

On matchday 35 of the Spanish LaLiga, champions Real Madrid lost the city derby against arch-rivals Atlético. The “Royal” lost 0-1 (0-1) on Sunday evening. Yannick Carrasco scored the winning goal with a penalty kick in the 40th minute.

After the exhausting 3-1 victory after extra time in the Champions League semi-final against Manchester City, Real coach Carlo Ancelotti rotated vigorously. Only Eder Militao, Nacho, Casemiro and Toni Kroos were in the starting XI again. Among other things, regular keeper Thibaut Courtois and star striker Karim Benzema (both bench) were given a break.

Atlético secured fourth place in the table with the win and with three games left and a six-point lead over Real Betis Sevilla, they have a good chance of qualifying for their tenth consecutive Champions League appearance. “We’re not letting up, we’re not through yet. The pressure will still be there, the club needs participation and we have the chance on Wednesday, it has to be three points. It’s getting easier, but there’s still a long way to go – if not Wednesday, then we’ll try everything on Saturday or in the last game,” said goalkeeper Jan Oblak (quoted via “Marca”) after the game. On Wednesday, the “Colchoneros” meet FC Elche.
