Defending champion Italy to last four Billie Jean King Cup
9.22 pm: The Italian tennis players have qualified for the semi -finals of the Billie Jean King Cup. In Shenzhen, the defending champion won 2-0 against host country China.
Elisabetta Cocciaretto defeated Yuan Yue 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Jasmine Paolini then also needed three sets against Wang Xinyu: 4-6, 7-6 (4) 6-4. In the semi -finals, Italy plays against Spain or Ukraine, which are opposite each other on Wednesday.
The final phase of the Billie Jean King Cup, the former Fed Cup, is in China for the first time this year. The two previous editions was Spain the host country.
Serbia deviates for ‘safety’ for a duel with Albania
13.46 hours: The World Cup qualifying match between Serbia and Albania has been moved from Belgrade to a smaller place in the south. “The main reason is safety. Not only for fans, but especially for the players and other stakeholders in this match,” reported the Serbian football association FSS. UEFA and opponent Albania approved the proposal to play the game on 11 October in Leskovac.
“Such a competition entails the highest risk and requires complete control to prevent incidents as they have previously occurred in earlier duels between these two teams,” the FSS added.
Among other things in 2014 a duel between the two countries got out of hand when a drone with a flag that advertised for a ‘Great Albania’ flew across the field. Angry fans ran into the field and the game was canceled. The relationship between the two countries is poor, partly due to the Kosovo war in 1999. In 2008, an Albanian ethnic majority proclaimed Kosovo as an independent Republic, which was never recognized by Serbia.
Atlético Madrid misses attacker Julán Álvarez in Liverpool
1.10 pm: Atlético Madrid misses on Wednesday in the away match against Liverpool in the Champions League Julián Álvarez. The Spanish club reports that the Argentinian attacker is not fit after he had dropped out halfway in the competition match with Villarreal (2-0) on Saturday.
The game between Liverpool and Atlético Madrid is one of the most appealing in the first round of the main tournament.
Atlético coach Diego Simeone cannot use Thiago Almada, José María Giménez, álex Baena and Johnny Cardoso on Anfield. None of the foursome was fit enough to travel to the English city.
