Former Spanish football champions Atletico Madrid have extended the contract with their coach Diego Simeone (53) for another three years until 2027.
The long-time Argentine international has coached Atletico since 2011, leading the club to two championship titles, one cup victory and two Europa League triumphs. In the Champions League, Simeone reached the final twice – but Atletico lost both finals against their overpowering city rivals Real.
The traditional club is currently leading Champions League Group E ahead of Lazio Rome, Feyenoord Rotterdam and Celtic Glasgow. Atletico is fourth in the Spanish league – six points behind sensational league leaders FC Girona. According to media reports, Simeone has agreed to extend his contract with reduced pay.
